"Americans do not seem to understand that they are the security problem we want to avoid."

What a statement. How much of this is people wanting to make money, and callously not caring about our needs, and how much of it is honest naivety? The former I can easily believe, but the second is harder. I guess there are plenty of people who tell themsleves that the US gov would never use their powers for anything but the most altruistic reasons, just so they can sleep easily at night... Actually, wait, I actually can imagine many people in sales for cloud services beleiving this fantasy with all of their little hearts, so they can continue selling their services with honest sincerity. Not all sales people are terrible, but it sure helps...

Great question! That is something I was dwelling upon. I am confident there is likely a little bit of both, but much of it is likely in niches or small applications. It's hard for me to tell right now just how are in either category. However, given the current landscape, there's a lot of naivety and overselling that cannot be ignored.

With that said, I would not be surprised if there is only a little bit of that. When we think of cloud computing, we often think of AWS/Google, where vast amounts of data are hosted, but there are many specialized uses where a large infrastructure footprint is not needed. This is where I would say is Canadian industry's greatest strength, there's a lot of great R&D and innovation at the SME level in Canada, especially in cyber and communications. A good example is CloudTak (https://cloudtak.io/), which is getting a lot of use by the CAF right now.

I have commented to you before about my ignorance of cyber matters, but reading your article Thank You for bringing this Christmas gift in March!

If I could, I would ship some Crown Royal to you!

Thanks, Scott! I always appreciate your questions and try to find a middle ground to still talk high level issues while allowing those with less knowledge to engage.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, I might be too old to enrich my knowledge of cyber matters…
